Music is a vital part of children's experience at Claygate. We have a specialist music teacher who works with every class in our purpose-built music room, and during their time at Claygate children will experience a wide range of musical experiences and will learn to listen, appreciate, play, compose and above all, enjoy music.
The well-equipped music room includes tuned and untuned percussion (xylophones, glockenspiels, a marimba, djembes and several drum kits), recorder, ukuleles and many other instruments. As well as having the opportunity to play instruments in music lessons, many children also learn an instrument with teachers from Surrey Arts. If you are interested in your children learning an instrument, please contact the school office.
The Senior Choir (Years 4-6) regularly performs outside of school, including annually at the turning on of the Claygate Christmas Lights. In 2014 they took part in a Barnardo's concert at The Royal Albert Hall. Their counterparts in the Junior Choir (Years 2 & 3) also perform in school and at the annual Spring Concert.
The ever-expanding Jazz Band plays in assemblies and at school concerts, performing music from a wide variety of genres.
In recognition of the part that music plays in children's overall arts education, we hold the Arts Council's Artsmark Gold Award.
