PSHE
Our PSHE curriculum reflects and reinforces our core school values: Safe and Healthy, Courageous, Achiever, Responsible, Respectful, and Friendly. We aim to promote a strong sense of citizenship and community, encouraging every pupil to believe in themselves, aim high, and realise that anything is possible with determination. When our pupils leave CPS, they are equipped with the knowledge, skills, values and emotional literacy to lead positive, successful lives in today’s society. We support them in building resilience, navigating challenges, expressing themselves confidently, and developing socially, emotionally, morally and spiritually in a fast-changing world.
We deliver two distinct PSHE schemes across the school:
- Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): The Big 3 + Me
- Years 1–6: Jigsaw – The Mindful Approach to PSHE
In our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we believe in laying a strong foundation for social, emotional, and mental wellbeing. That’s why we’ve introduced The Big 3 + Me, a key part of our PSHE (Personal, Social, and Health Education) curriculum.
The Big 3 focuses on three core concepts essential for young children's development:
- Self-awareness – Understanding and expressing feelings, recognising strengths and areas for growth.
- Relationships – Learning about kindness, respect, and how to interact with others in a positive way.
- Health and Wellbeing – Developing healthy habits and making choices that contribute to physical and emotional health.
The + Me component places emphasis on each child's unique identity, celebrating what makes them special and helping them understand their role in their family, school, and wider community.
Through stories, role-play, discussions, and practical activities, The Big 3 + Me helps our youngest learners build resilience, empathy, and confidence, setting them up for a happy and successful school journey.
For Years 1–6, we follow the Jigsaw PSHE programme, a comprehensive, creative, and mindful approach to personal development. This scheme embodies a positive philosophy and adopts creative teaching and learning activities to nurture children’s development as compassionate and well-rounded human beings, as well as building their capacity to learn.
Jigsaw’s core aims:
· To build their capacity for learning
· To equip them for life
Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, compulsory Relationships and Health Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. It is designed so that each year group is working on the same theme (puzzle) at the same time, at their own level. There are six puzzles (half-term units of work) and these are taught in weekly lessons. These are delivered in an age and stage appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.
The six topics throughout the year are as follows:
- Being Me in my World
- Celebrating Differences
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
