CPS Cultural Capital and the Claygate Charter

At the heart of CPS Curriculum are opportunities for all children to appreciate, recognise and develop learner skills and character traits which underpin our Claygate Charter or promise to develop cultural capital for every child to reach both academic and personal potential. We believe that these are intrinsically connected; the rich offer we provide results in well balanced children who are eager and ready to learn.

Ofsted and Cultural Capital ‘The essential knowledge that pupils need to be educated citizens, introducing them to the best that has been thought and said, and helping engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.’

The Claygate Charter is a collection of experiences we feel all children should experience before they leave CPS. This includes trips, visitors, experiences, extra-curricular opportunities and our Enrichment Programme. Our children participate in weekly Enrichment Sessions from Year 1.

These sessions enable children to explore elements of the National Curriculum at a deeper level, broadening their experiences through a variety of activities, enriching their understanding of Science, PSHE, Geography, The Arts, Computer Science and PE. Children also have a block of Japanese.

These opportunities are highly valued as they give children the time to explore and use their imagination, develop self-confidence and build responsibility and resilience. They foster transferable skills and boost overall academic achievement, leading to better future work opportunities, enhanced well-being and self-esteem. Led by experienced members of staff, children complete a half-termly block of each Enrichment segment every year. The knowledge and skills children acquire are progressive so provides vibrant and exciting opportunities to learn new skills and practise them over time. We make full use of our wonderful grounds for these sessions.

Although our Enrichment programme plays its part, at CPS, Cultural Capital is further developed through:

  • Personal Development
  • Social Development
  • Physical Development
  • Spiritual Development
  • Moral Development
  • Cultural Development

"The ‘Claygate Charter’ provides pupils with a variety of enrichment activities, such as gardening, sport, art and Japanese.  These help promote pupils’ physical and mental well-being. Many more pupils are representing the school in sporting fixtures." - OFSTED 2020
