During this part of our Enrichment programme, the children prepare the extensive allotments, grow a variety of produce and decide what to do with what they have grown. Not only does gardening provide opportunities for increasing scientific knowledge and understanding, and improving literacy, numeracy and oracy, but it also improves confidence, resilience and self-esteem. It gives them a sense of responsibility, and fosters positive behaviour.
Currently we are growing a wide range of squashes and learning all about growing vegetables from seed. Our Greenfingers have also created an ‘outside toilet shed’ which was recognised at this year’s Hampton Court Flower Show.
